Alicante travel guide: Day 1

The first day we will dedicate it to take a pleasant walk through the center and the area of the promenade and the port. To end this second day you can visit the Co-Cathedral of San Nicolás de Bari which next to the Cathedral of the Savior of Orihuela are the headquarters of the diocese of Orihuela-Alicante.
It was built on the remains of a mosque between 1616 and 1662, it is in the Herrerian Renaissance style with a very sober appearance on the outside. However, the cloister is from the 15th century and in the Gothic style.
Inside there is a large dome but above all the Communion chapel stands out, one of the most beautiful in Spanish Baroque art.

Plaza de los Luceros is very important in Alicante, it is rare that someone visits this city and does not pass through this square, It has a beautiful garden and in the center of the square is a fountain designed by the Alicante sculptor Daniel Bañuls.
The fountain consists of several parts, at the bottom there are four horses representing the four seasons and at the foot of the horses is the figure of an elf.
In the center of the fountain are four female statues bearing an 8-pointed red star on their heads, each representing a planet.
Above the monument is a tree from the Hesperides, which rises up into the sky.

This square had previously been called Plaza de la Independencia and Plaza de Cataluña, but since the 1940s it has been called Plaza de los Luceros.

The Castillo de San Fernando was built on top of Cerro Tossal during the war of independence, in 1813, against the French, on one of the main axes of the city's Ensanche. It was built to be a prison, but it never came to practice as such a position that the French never occupied Alicante.

The Basilica of Santa María was built on the ruins of the largest Islamic mosque in Alicante in the 15th century, it is the oldest religious construction in the city of Alicante. It consists of a nave with side chapels.
In the XV century there was a fire so it had to be rebuilt and its baroque façade contrasts with the two asymmetric towers since one was built in the XV century and the other in the XVIII century

In the Chapter Hall there is a huge baptismal font from the 16th century and a Valencian baroque organ from 1653.

The “Cara del Moro” is an icon of the city of Alicante.
The rocks of a part of Mount Benacantil, on which the Castle of Santa Bárbara sits, draw the profile of a man, with his turban and everything.
