Recommendations for a 3-day trip to Dubrovnik

The city of Dubrovnik can be seen perfectly in 3 days, so you can get an idea, There are hundreds of cruises that dock a single day in Dubrovnik and it may seem enough to see dubrovnik since the tourist part is the historical center that includes the walled city and it is not too big. In our opinion the ideal is to spend 1 or 2 days in Dubrovnik and then combine it with day trips. There are many options for day trips and you will see which ones interest you the most.

When traveling to Dubrovnik

There are three clearly differentiated tourist seasons, they are as follows:

High Season : July and August.
Pros: The water temperature is warm and ideal for taking a dip on Croatian beaches. The weather is very hot and you will enjoy clear skies.
Cons: A lot of tourists, it is the time that the most tourists receive and moving around the city is quite complicated. Hotel occupancy is also at its maximum and accommodation prices are at its highest level.
Middle Season : May, June and September. Our favorite option.
Pros: Fewer tourists than in high season, good weather in terms of temperatures and rainfall. More possibility of finding accommodation at a good price.
Cons: Especially in May the water is still somewhat cold. And rainfall is more likely in the months of May and September compared to the high season (we shouldn't worry).
Low Season : From October to April.
The weather is not particularly harsh. And it is a city that can be visited all year round. You can enjoy the city with very few tourists except in European festive times such as Christmas and Easter. You will be able to know what life is like in the city outside the tourist season.

What to see in Dubrovnik in three days

This guide has been prepared based on our experience having visited Dubrovnik on several occasions, one of them in summer (not recommended for its hordes of tourists) that is why we are going to try to take a tour that allows you to get to know Dubrovnik and surroundings in just three days.

Trip to Dubrovnik: Day 1

The first thing we will do is enter the walled city.

Puerta Pile

puerta-pile-entrada-dubrovnik

This door is the main gateway to the historic city center. It is guarded by a statue of the San Blas (protector of the city). It is reached by crossing a beautiful stone bridge that crosses an old moat that is currently a garden but was a defense moat with water.

The streets of the old town

Enjoy a pleasant walk through the streets of the old town, walk them aimlessly, get lost in them, discover corners (there are thousands of them) and fall in love with a city like this. Spend a couple of hours touring, photographing, and looking at all the details you find.
Estimated time required: 2/3 hours.

Onofrio Fountain
It is one of the most emblematic points of the city. Built in 1438, it was part of the city's water supply system. This system brought water from a well 12 km away. It had a very striking decoration of which currently only 16 masks are preserved.

Fuente-de-onofrio

The Clock Tower
At the end of the main street and right next to the entrance to the port is the Clock Tower. Built in 1444 and rebuilt on numerous occasions. Characterized by the two bronze figures in charge of ringing the hours of the bell tower.

Church of Saint Blaise and Column of Orlando
Impressive church built in 1715 in the image and likeness of that of Saint Maurice in Venice. Inside it hides marble altars and a beautiful image of Saint Blaise holding a model of Dubrovnik. It is undoubtedly more spectacular on the outside and enjoying its incomparable setting.
Located in the center of the main square, there you can contemplate it and enjoy a coffee or a rest with beautiful views of the clock tower.

City walls

If there is something essential in Dubrovnik it is to walk along the city walls, it is its main tourist attraction. The old town is surrounded by these walls. The price is 150 Kuna (about 20). It will take you a little over 2 hours. And it will offer you a unique view of the peculiar city of Dubrovnik and its orange roofs. You will find different points with wonderful views of the city and the sea.
There are 3 access points to the walls. The main one is next to the Pile door. We recommend you make this visit in the afternoon, in this way you will avoid the numerous and large groups of tourists from the cruises, who usually take this morning tour. Cruises usually set sail shortly after lunchtime making the walls look much more empty.

One of the most popular attractions after the old town is the cable car that goes up to the top of the city. The cable car is located on the outskirts of the old town, about a 5-minute walk away, in the Ploce neighborhood. The 778-meter funicular path offers stunning views of the Old City.
The upper station has two panoramic terraces equipped with binocular telescopes, a bar, a panoramic restaurant, a souvenir shop and much more.
If we visit it at sunset the view is really wonderful, seeing how the sun falls on this city is a great spectacle.

Excursion to the islands near Dubrovnik

After the activities already proposed we will go to the port and from there we can hire a ferry that will take us to our next attraction. We have two options to visit the neighboring island of Lokrum that can be seen from Dubrovnik or choose an excursion to 'The Elafiti Islands', the most popular of which is Kolocep. You can take the Ferry that takes you directly or hire an excursion.

Option 1: Lokrum.

lokrum-dubrovnik

Visible almost from all over Dubrovnik, it is only 15/20 minutes by ferry from the port. With a frequency of 30 minutes. While the city is full of tourists in Lokrum you can have the feeling of being on an island alone for you. You have hiking to the top of the island with a magnificent view of the city as well as pebble beaches and what is known as 'Death See', is a spectacular hole in the rock with salt water. It seems out of a story. The largest company is provided by the countless peacocks you will find throughout the island.

Option 2: Elafiti Islands.

Kolocep-excursion

You can take the Ferry that takes you to Kolocep, the fast boat takes about 25 minutes. It costs about 11 Kunas. And you can enjoy the rest of the day on the island and some nice baths and walks around it. Inhabited by just 150 people and it has sandy beaches and pebbles.
Ideal for about 3/4 hours.

You can also hire what they call 'Three Islands Tour' that will take you through Kolocep, Lopud and Sipan. In this case the excursion is for a full day and serves to escape the bustle of Dubrovnik and enjoy a calmer stage.

We are going to give you several options depending on your tastes and interests so that you choose the one that interests you the most.

Option 1: For the most adventurous

We recommend that you choose between 1 of these two options. They are fabulous, we would not know which way to keep the truth, so we leave you both to choose. The Passport is important since you are going to visit a country other than Croatia and that does not belong to the European Union.

Visit to Mostar in Bosnia

mostar-bosnia

This visit will take us back to the recent history of the wars in Yugoslavia. We will visit the Mostar Bridge representing peace. Mostar is a mix of European culture with mosques, bazaars and historical places of different origins. A site worth visiting.

We recommend making this visit with a guide who can explain well everything that happened and can thus make the most of the visit. Here you can hire the excursion to Mostar and the Kravice waterfalls, thus completing a splendid day. This visit is with a guide in Spanish.
